Two Premier League footballers arrested on suspicion of rape and suspended by club

Two Premier League players have been arrested on suspicion of rape, police have confirmed.

The Sun report that the two unnamed players, who are from the same club, were arrested last weekend.

The unnamed pair have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

It has also been reported that the pair have now been suspended by their club.

One of the players was spoken to by police on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape while at the club's stadium at the weekend.

The Sun's report adds that following a brief interview, he was allowed to leave the stadium before a formal arrest was made.

The player's teammate, who is the same age, was also arrested the next day and questioned on suspicion of rape.

The alleged rape is said to have occurred on Friday night, and the alleged victim contacted the police hours later and filed a formal complaint.

“Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape," a police spokesperson told The Sun.

“A 19 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape.

“A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have since been released on police bail.”

As well as this, a club spokesman said: “As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the football club will not be making further comment at this stage.”

It is unclear if the two players have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have since released a statement on the matter.

It read: "A newspaper article published yesterday has triggered inappropriate online speculation over the identities of two individuals reportedly under police investigation.

"Whilst we would not typically comment on ongoing police matters, in order to protect the welfare of our young players, we feel it is necessary to confirm that the allegations do not relate to anyone at Wolves."

The Premier League has been plagued by a number of high-profile sex scandals in recent years.

Mason Greenwood, the Manchester United striker, was suspended in 2022 after being arrested for attempted rape.

The case was later dropped, but Greenwood has not played for United since and is currently on loan at Getafe.

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was cleared of multiple rapes after two trials last year.
