Stoke City on verge of striking deal for Huddersfield Town defender

Stoke City are close to signing Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith.

The Potters are believed to be paying a fee of £4 million for his signature, according to a report by the Examiner Live.

Nathan Jones’ side have been busy in this transfer window bolstering their squad ahead of next season and are expected to make Smith their seventh acquisition.

Smith is Huddersfield’s captain and has been a key player for the Yorkshire side over the past few years.

The Warrington-born right-back started his career at Tranmere Rovers before joining Manchester City when he was 11. He rose up through the youth ranks with City but was released in 2012.

He had trials at Oxford United and Stevenage before Huddersfield signed him. He made his debut for the Yorkshire side two years later in a League Cup tie against Hull City in September 2013.

Smith has since played over 200 games for the Terriers and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League in 2017 under David Wagner. He then helped them stay up in the top flight during their first season there but couldn’t prevent them slipping back into the Championship in the last campaign.
Celtic have also been in the race to sign him this summer with it appears that fellow second tier side Stoke have finally won the race to acquire him as their recruitment drive continues.
