Derby County winger makes permanent move to fellow Championship side

It has been confirmed on Thursday evening that Derby County’s young winger Luke Thomas has joined newly promoted Barnsley on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.

It was reported here on The72 last week that Derby County winger Luke Thomas was closing in on a move to Barnsley for a reported fee of £1.2 million.

Now, the move has been made official. Derby County confirmed the departure of Thomas on their club website, putting pen to paper onto a four-year deal at Oakwell. The young winger caught the attention of the Tykes while on loan with Coventry City last season, where he played 44 times across all competitions, scoring five goals and laying on five assists along the way.

His performances showed that he deserves a chance in the Championship but it seemed unlike;y that he would be guaranteed game time at Pride Park with Derby. But his move to Oakwell will likely see him involved in the first-team picture at Oakwell as he looks to prove himself in the second tier.

During his time at Derby County, Thomas played twice for the club’s senior team after making his way through their youth ranks. His form for their Under-23s warranted a Football League loan move to gather some first-team senior experience, which will stand him in good stead ahead of next season with Barnsley.

Speaking to the Barnsley club website upon the announcement, Thomas said:

“I’m very excited to join a club like Barnsley. It’s a young, talented side and they proved that last season when they got promoted, so I’m very happy to be here and, hopefully, I can bring something new to the team.

“I thought Barnsley were probably the best team in the division; they’re very hard-working and can keep the ball very well, and it’s a team that I’d love to play in.
