Aston Villa outcast linked with move to Celtic

Aston Villa outcast Micah Richards could finally be leaving the club, according to The Scotsman.

Scottish giants Celtic are reportedly monitoring the defender, who hasn’t featured for the Villains in over two years.

The 30-year-old arrived at Villa Park back in 2015 from Manchester City, where he had picked up a Premier League winners’ medal and lifted the FA Cup. His career, however, has stalled in the Midlands and he has been frozen out of the first-team since Villa were relegated to the Championship in 2016.

The former England international has been plagued by a knee injury that has seen his career grind to a halt, but is an undoubtedly talented player when fit. The Bhoys are currently top of the Scottish Premier League but may look to bolster their backline with the signing of Richards, who is an athletic and powerful defender that can operate at right-back or in the heart of defence.

Many will have wondered whether Dean Smith’s appointment as Villa manager in October 2018 would have been a catalyst for the revival of Richards’ career, but the former Brentford boss insisted that he wasn’t close to being in contention:

“Micah has trained with us but he’s not played for a long time so his fitness is not near to be in contention at all at the moment.

“We’ll see how his fitness builds over the next month or two.”

Although pure speculation at this point, a move to Scotland would certainly be beneficial for both Richards and Villa as the current situation benefits neither party.
