After 3-3 thriller in the first leg, Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 12th minute after finding the net at the second attempt.

His first shot was straight at Ederson, but he made no mistake from the rebound.

The home side dominated possession for most of the match after the Madrid goal and had to wait until the 76th minute to get the equaliser.

Kevin De Bruyne fired in to make it 1-1 on the night, and 4-4 on aggregate, to send the quarter-final to extra-time.

The two teams could still not be separated and the shootout beckoned.

It was the first time a Champions League quarter-final went to penalties in 19 years.

Madrid won the shootout 4-3 to make it to the semi-final with Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic having penalties saved.

Silva bizzarely hit his spot-kick straight at the Madrid goalkeeper.

talkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface called it: "One of the worst penalties I've ever seen."

Jude Bellingham was among those to score his spot-kick for the Spanish side, as the England midfielder led the jubilant celebrations.

There will be no back-to-back trebles for City, as focus will now turn to the two trophies they can win.

Pep Guardiola's side are currently top of the Premier League, but first they face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
