RBC Heritage betting preview

With this year’s RBC Heritage given Signature status and a first-prize cheque of $3.6million, most of the leading protagonists in last week’s US Masters make the two-and-a-half hour journey from inland Augusta to coastal Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. 

That includes Masters hero Scottie Scheffler although whether he starts or plays the full 72 holes remains in doubt with his wife Meredith about to give birth to their new baby soon. Scheffler says he will walk off if the call comes.

Although Scheffler can win just about anywhere right now, this may not be the best week to back him. 

Ludvig Aberg will be hoping to go one better after his brilliant Masters debut while the trio of third-place finishers at Augusta - Tommy Fleetwood, Max Homa and Collin Morikawa - also line up at the par 71 Harbour Town Golf Links.

In contrast to Augusta last week, this piece of property has tight fairways, overhanging trees and small, contoured bermuda greens. 

Jointly-designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, it’s also fairly short at 7,213 yards.

🏌️‍♂️ Matt Fitzpatrick can win again

Matt Fitzpatrick has a special connection with Hilton Head having spent many years on holiday there with his family.

So when he beat Jordan Spieth at this venue in a playoff last year to win the plaid jacket and have his photograph taken in front of the course’s iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse, it was a dream come true.

“I think I can retire now. This is the one I’ve always wanted to win. This is just a special place for me and it means the world to have won it,” he said later.

But that was then and this is now. The Englishman will be hungry to win it again.

Boo Weekley captured this event in back-to-back years in 2007-8 while Spieth almost pulled off that same feat last year.

As a good omen, Fitzpatrick once made a successful defence of the Omega European Masters at Crans and he’ll return in good form after tied 22nd in the Masters, 10th at the Texas Open and fifth in the Players Championship on his last three starts.

For a 72-hole match bet, back young Swedish sensation Ludvig Aberg to get the better of Rory McIlroy at 10/11 with bet365.

Aberg will be on a high after finishing second on his Masters debut but Rory’s mood will be much more reflective after never getting in a blow at Augusta and ending tied 22nd. 

This is Aberg’s first look at Harbour Town but expect him to hit the ground running.

McIlroy has played it twice but with a lack of opportunities to hit driver, this doesn’t look like his sort of course as shown by 58th and 41st on his only two starts here.

🏌️‍♂️ Taylor Moore for Top 10

Taylor Moore finished 11th here on his tournament debut 12 months ago and is worth backing at 19/4 with bet365 to go one better and land in the top 10 this time.

The American was runner-up in the Houston Open two starts ago and added a top 20 at The Masters to suggest he’s a player worth following.
